The local area was a thriving industrial area in times past with mills, mines, foundries and breweries thriving throughout the area. Traces of this can be seen in the old mill buildings now enjoying a second life as flats or retail space. Near Fishcross, all that remains of the Devon Colliery is the (Beam Engine House (10 minutes) ) with its massive cast-iron beam and pump. Bridges over the Forth are so often taken for granted by those who use them. The Forth Rail Bridge (40 Minutes) was rightly considered the eighth wonder of the world when it was first built. Even today it is easy to see why. By contrast, near Falkirk, modern engineering at its most imaginative can be seen in the world's first and only rotating boat lift - the Falkirk Wheel (35 minutes) . This Google map shows where things are. |
